Radi li se o sukobu starog i novog ili o opravdanim optužbama, prosudite - Vi!
''Sumnja" govori o krizi vjere. Predstava postavlja pitanje: što se događa sa vjerom danas? Sa povjerenjem? Sa vjerovanjem?
Autor John Patrick Shanley vrlo duboko propituje cijelu našu civilizaciju.
Priča predstave intrigantna je i iznad svega, kompleksna kao i sama tema.
Shanley ne nudi jednoznačne odgovore i vodi nas dubok o u same temelje čovječnosti.

The place of Doubt
Although a catholic school and church are chosen as the place of action in Doubt, these places are only a starting point for a much deeper and comprehensive analysis of the crisis of faith and lack of trust in the modern world.
Doubt as a motivator is definitely a positive force, yet how can we distinguish between healthy doubts which lead to new understanding and the corrupting suspicion?
Can we indulge ourselves by believing or has the world become too corrupted and dangerous place for us to allow such a risk.
In the age of exponential growth of scientific and technological advancements, the society is changing at an increasingly rapid pace. Holding on to the old ways has become nearly impossible; the fight for their survival is basically a fight for power where ideals and beliefs are just an alibi for legitimizing a struggle for power.
A society which has barren intentions, which is not developing, not changing its thinking paradigm and continues evading reevaluation of its values (which would inevitably lead to confrontation with its darker side) is a society which suspects everything new and everything that brings progress. Such a society doubts everything except its own “perfect”, dogmatic order based on division (racial, national), manipulation (of individuals and minorities) and so on. Its doubts everything different, new and labels it as evil, even demonic. The perception of progress as an obstacle on the path of self-realization or, as this play portrays it, on the path to God, can nowadays best be seen in religious (and often national) exclusiveness in some parts of almost every great religion which have produced pain and suffering in the past and present times.
When opponents of progress seize power in a society, they try to force everyone under a common denominator. People. There is no individual identity, only mass identity.
This has brought us to where we are now in Croatia; a society of mortal danger, infested by organized crime and corruption whose evils seeds planted in the early 90’s are beginning to bear bitter fruits in a process of self-cleansing of the society, a process which swallows innocents along with the guilty.
In such a society doubt is just stepping in, it is just being born. It is here, but it is dangerous. Anyone who expresses doubt is out of the game. He is no longer a participant. No longer a player. No longer a soldier. He is alone. In a world where division is everywhere, in schools, business, politics, doubt remains hidden while suspicion reigns. And fear.
Today our society is beginning to doubt. As the political events in this self-cleansing process become more dynamic, more and more people are beginning to doubt and those who have had doubts for a long time have finally dared to express them. They are overcoming their fear. They are starting to talk in public, sharing their bitter experiences which question the institutions, moral, politics, government, state, the people responsible. Which state? Whose state? Mine? Doubt.
People do not believe in justice, righteousness or good. They do not believe in creation, building, and communication. People do not believe people.
How to change a society which lacks trust, intimacy and compassion?
Where can we find the strength to move forward? How to build a community of love and trust? Of communication? Common good? Diversity? Creativity? Curiosity? Interest? Compassion? Empathy? How to believe that it is really possible? Those are the questions asked by father Flynn. But, he is also being doubted! So, who can trust?
''Ourselves!'', says Shanley.
